Why the push towards natural skincare?

Posted on

Think about everything you've already put on your face and body today – scrubs, moisturisers, make-up, perfume and that's before you've even left the house!

Many of us use several products a day and because our skin is more of a sponge than a barrier, we're regularly absorbing hundreds of chemicals that most of us know nothing about. Toxins absorbed through the skin can be more dangerous to your health because the toxins lodge right into your fat cells instead of going through your digestive system through the liver which helps to filter toxins out of your body. Most ingredients are industry-backed, but we don't yet know what side effects these ingredients will cause to our skin over time nor how our body's chemicals will react/grow/age/change with them.

60% to 80% of what you put on our skin ends up being absorbed in the body and when the products we use are made from harmful artificial ingredients these place an unnecessary burden on the body’s detoxification processes and on the entire immune system, including the skin. Some chemicals remain stored in the body for several months or even years before they are completely eliminated. Many of these chemicals associated with health hazards are being passed onto unborn children. More than 33% of all skin care products contain at least one ingredient linked to cancer. The amount of chemical ingredients in one single product may not be enough to harm one person, but when the same synthetic chemical is used in multiple products you use every day, there is an accumulative effect of exposure that can result in health problems.

Synthetic skincare products may seem to produce instant/fast results, but only whilst the product is being used.  Natural alternatives can work at a cellular level to provide long lasting results without the harmful long-term effects.

Harmful ingredients in cosmetics aren’t just a personal issue any more. Every product we use on our skin will eventually end up in soil and waterways, where it can further impact microorganisms and aquatic life.

Natural ingredients are usually a much safer alternative, although we all need to bear in mind that plants can also trigger unwanted reactions in some people.

Always check the ingredients and make informed decisions.

The average adult uses 9 #skincare products daily, which is equivalent to 126 synthetic #chemicals you are exposing yourself to daily!
